Background Info: The Modern Pioneer Bushcraft program offers hands-on projects tailored to various learning styles. Its goal is to develop practical skills across multiple areas that students can use throughout their lives. The program focuses on two CTS streams: Wildlife and Fashion Design. Topics covered include leathercraft, hand sewing, machine sewing, backpack stove cooking, food processing, bike maintenance, ski and snowboard maintenance, archery, fire craft, shelter building, traps and snares, knife skills, knot tying, navigation, and more. Students who enjoy a dynamic learning environment will find this course particularly engaging.

Modern Pioneer Bushcraft 10: Level 1 (5 credits)

  • Station 1 – Hand/Machine Sewing – Hand Stiches, Mending, Buttons/Sewing bags and outdoor gear.
  • Station 2 – AHEIA Certification -Boat License/Fishing Cert.
  • Station 3 – Leather Work – Bracelets, key tags.
  • Station 4 – Maintenance – Bike mechanics, bike maintenance, ski/board maintenance, Hot wax.
  • Station 5 – Camp Stove Use – Stove and fuel safety, stove start up, boiling water, cooking, freeze drying, 
  • Station 6 – Knife Use – Safety, whittling, battening, feather stick, carving techniques.
  • Station 7 – Survivability - Knots, specialty knots, shelter building, traps and snares.
  • Station 8 – Food Preservation- Dehydrated bananas/apples, fruit leather, beef jerky.
  • Navigation – Natural navigation techniques, map reading, compass use
  • Fire Craft – Tinder/Kindling, fire styles, one match fire

Modern Pioneer Bushcraft 20/30: Level 2 & 3 (5 credits)
Recommended Prerequisite: none required

  • Station 1 – Hand/Machine Sewing – Machine sewing, lined jean bag, toiletry bag, winter toque, mitts, hat and outdoor gear.
  • Station 2 – AHEIA Certification - Fishing Cert./Hunter’s Safety Cert/Bear Essentials.
  • Station 3 – Leather Work – Wallets, belts, stamping, carving, key tags, knife sheaths, earrings.
  • Station 4 – Maintenance – Bike mechanics, bike maintenance, ski/board maintenance, Hot wax, tuning, bow maintenance, arrow maintenance,
  • Station 5 – Camp Stove Use – Stove and fuel safety, stove start up, one pot cooking, freeze drying food, re-hydrating food, charred cloth, rocket stove build, open flame cooking, stove repair.
  • Station 6 – Knife Use – Safety, carving techniques, whittling, spoon making, knife sharpening, axe sharpening, wood carving.
  • Station 7 – Survivability - Knots, specialty knots, shelter building, traps and snares, more.
  • Station 8 – Food Preservation- Beef jerky, pork jerky, salmon jerky, sausage making, mixed fruit leather, water bath, jarring jelly, freezer jam, pickles, smoking meat.
  • Navigation – Map & compass, aiming off, resection, UTM, longitude & latitude, build a compass, navigate around an object, route planning, GPS.
  • Fire Craft – Charred cloth fire, fire bundle, Primitive fire craft, flint and steel
